madame e. is a musical setting of georges bataille’s “madame edwarda”, a short novel that interlaces themes of eroticism, religiosity and death, and was written under the pseudonym pierre angelique in 1941, during the occupation of paris. composer mirco magnani wrote eleven electronic pieces and presented them to actor/singer ernesto tomasini. they turned them into songs by adding vocal melodies and together they produced a libretto based on bataille’s french text. the result of their dynamic interpretation is a hypnotically spellbinding performance where the audience is transported through worlds – ancient and new – and where tomasini’s haunting falsetto conveys the tormented emotions in bataille’s work and becomes the instrument that articulates the writer’s famously obscure themes.

air cushion finishsdistinctive sound palette reconciles pop music with experimental electronics, think alan bishop meets white noise (with a touch of super collider?) air cushion finish formed in berlin in 2007 and comprises of composer jayrope and natural vocal synthesizer lippstueck, who have graced berlin’s underground scene together since the 1990 s. lippstueck sings, wordless and backwards in time while his partner jayrope tends diy, electronic, string or percussion instruments small enough to fit into a small suitcase. changing setup and subsequently music is programmatic to the band, resulting into an unforeseeable slow motion cacophony of whispers, bleeps, rhythms and harmonies. theres a notion of dada, but you never know. the 8th album of acf marks their current state of poetical accident, swaying, swinging and bouncing, boldly careful, like a transparent tattoo on your forehead.

originally founded by kisk back in 2009 apparel music set out to offer something truly singular in focusing their musical output predominately on jazz whilst venturing into its integration across the landscape of electronic music at the time.with a zealous release schedule, they racked up a healthy collection of eps between 2010-2015 from artists such as delano smith, scsi-9, sarp yilmaz and the label owner himself amongst many others. now after a year-long hiatus, the label makes a return with a slick 4-track va that fans both old and new will relish. strictly limited to a pressing of 200 on 180 grams of wax, their re-launch brings with it a jazz-suffused 4-track record featuring voyeur, ivano tetelepta & eugeÌne latumeten, kisk and kerem akdag. voyeurs swinging for theo kicks things off with organic, brushed drums and a walking bass line set off to a tight, swaying rhythm. glassy rhodes keys bleed into the mix ahead of piano stabs and 909 hats that propel progress when combined with a thickened low-end. ivano tetelepta & eugeine latumeten follow up with je suis reconnaissant a bass-heavy groove that lays soulful vocal samples over filtered piano chords and loose-limbed hat patterns. kisks just u then drives a crackly drum loop through distant, flexing synth tones. arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before istanbuls kerem akdags closes up the package. akin to the styles of producers such as henry wu and max graef, akdags friend melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for apparel music.

valby001 demonstrates louf’s keen ear for growling analogue synthesisers and crunchy perpetual drum rhythms. hiccup is a wintery club jam that follows an intertwining exchange between a vocal motif and a warm winding synth line, held down by a pounding drum workout. dawn loop provides a breath of early morning nostalgia, with a combination of dusty rattling percussion and hypnotic chords that swell and crackle recurrently.

safer at night returns late january 2017 with the vinyl only release of the deep end , featuring two original curses cuts and remixes from ian blevins and holy ghost! safer at night founder curses launched the label back in 2014 and it has since gone to play host to material from eli esobar, walker & royce, jagerverb and of course the label founder himself. here we see curses re-release his composition the deep end marking the ten-year anniversary of its former releases on institutes in 2007, while enlisting ian blevins and holy ghost! on remix duties and stirring in a new original of his own as well. the original mix of the deep end takes the lead and offers a chance to revisit the decade old curses cut fuelled by wandering bass and lead guitar licks, dropped-tempo crunchy rhythms and murky piano chords all instilled with a gritty new york electro feel. holy ghost! then rework the original with the funk-laden feel via bright chord sequences, elongated delay swells and an amalgamation of 80 s synth leads, hooky bass lines and sporadic vocal lines. on the flip ian blevins offers up his interpretation of in shadows employing stuttering vocal hits, choppy arpeggios and droning bass leads to create an emotive and hypnotic number before curses original mix of in shadows closes on a cinematic vibe with an 80 s sci-fi soundtrack feel to perfectly conclude this vinyl only 10 year celebration.

power station continue to present their penchant for dark dance club sounds as the third edition of the kris baha-led imprint looks to another melbourne local by way of lochlan denholm aka disrute. after surfacing on the labels sampler debut just last year, reflexivity sees lochlan a chance to explore his style of twisted, pulsing homage to new wave and motorik throb. anvil landing wastes no time laying down intentions. sparse friendly drums are met with a modulating bass line and lazy arpeggio, an incessant sonar pulses and drum rolls intensify. snorkel continues the mid-tempo intensity, distressed kick counterpoint with aggressive stabs that rise and swirl before reaching a powerful climax, a track reminiscent of the 2000 s turbo-charged italo disco edits. on the flip we see japanese supergroup mascaras, made up of chida and 5ive (cos/mes) tackle unreleased kabutops. vocal fans of disrute s kabu track from the label sampler, here mascaras provide a fast paced acid-heavy reinterpretation, intense yet restrained with erratic drum trickery taking disrute to techno territory. finally, disrute reflects with title track reflexivity. digital arpeggios and a brooding one note bass work around curt cress style harmonic drums, a low slung piece for the early evening. hand drawn picture sleeve and label, a complete package that signals exciting times for power station ahead.

nyc based & distant music label boss jon cutler returns to the studio with eric (eman) clark . this time around jon keeps the production deep dubby & minimal. while e-man who has gained a reputation for his spoken word poetry, commands the track with his signature voice, and delivery style. the statement goes out to all the dj s,producers and music bizz people on why we do what we do in this scene & why we can t live with out it!!! dede ceballos on the female vocals adds a nice answer & response to the track. instrumental mix included along with a nice stripped down version for those long power mixing blends !!!

adam port and jimpster have had a special kind of ‘virtual’ relationship the last few years with a mutual respect for each others productions and output of their respective labels. keinemusik, which adam runs alongside rampa, &me and reznik, has grown into one of the most consistent and hottest out there right now with every release creating a big splash and bringing magic to so many dancefloors around the world. adam recently remixed jimpster’s eel pie island to devastating effect bringing his own deep, late night atmospherics to the original and creating one of 2016’s underground hits in the process. so now we’re very pleased to welcome adam port (alongside legendary uk artists stereo mc’s) for a full release on freerange in the form of changes. opening the release we have adam’s own remix which sets the tone with a subtle and gently building groove providing the perfect backdrop for the stereo mc’s esoteric vocal. this lesson in restraint shows why adam’s productions work so well on big systems, letting all the focus shine firmly on the vocal creating an intense atmosphere with not a single huge breakdown in sight! next up we have the original of changes which takes a more electro approach with a simple bassline and crisp hats and once again allowing the vocal space to take centre stage for a deep and memorable track with a message. finally we have a remix from our own jimpster opts to push in a completely different direction. shuffling up the groove and laying down a repeating rhodes riff we’re treated to an altogether more soulful and less stark version making the perfect compliment to the the package. this one makes us think of his remix of osunlade’s momma’s groove which is no bad thing we feel! enjoy!

geography 008 presents jayda g on a tripp! one original, one vocal version, one dj dog remix! strictly for everyone. with previous outings on butter sessions and her own (and dj fett burger’s) label freakout cult, jayda g now turns to the somewhat highly acclaimed but in no way award winning label geography for some canadian-swedish bilateral abracadabra. swirl shake mix features three hit tracks for every occasion, starting out with two different versions of the stripped back track shake it all down, and ending with the funk affair feel it, featuring the mysterious but fast food loving dj dog on remix duties.

reboot takes another slice from his recent album ‘alive’ out for a walk. this time it’s ‘are you losing my mind?’. first we’re treated to the vinyl version full of everything we loved from the original. a stripped down tech house beat sprinkled with a might vocal hymn and plenty of groove. then ricardo takes over the track with his own very particular style. he’s made two distinct versions, ‘hauswiedermischung’ is first. as he’s known to do, villalobos created a kind of chaos in which the track lives without ever losing the groove and with plenty of little surprises to discover throughout. next is ricardo’s twenty four minute ‘losing my miles’ remix, and here is where he really loosens the grip on the track and lets it wander in and out of coherence, taking it and us along for a special ride that only ricardo can deliver. from beginning to end, you don’t know what to expect but you know it when it comes. get it, press play, and lose your mind.

* roots pt. iii* is the third installment in petter b s series of homages to his roots of techno. this time with trippy pads gliding across creating a soundscape. on the b-side you find a new drummer track, also a name which has become synonymous with bond. this straight and no-bull-shit-groove continues the names proud tradition. as the inner track on the b-side there is a vocal driven track with spaced out sounds flying by. all accompanied by a heavy drum and slowly evolving hi-hats.

sydney edit maestro the owl is back with yet another 4 track slab of pure goodness. opening with his dance floor grenade street playa that merges chicago s disco classic into the more recent bucketheads version that ruled dancefloors in the 90s . the second track is another merger-style edit. working his magic on the temptations classic footsteps in the dark . with nods to the ice cube classic good day that also sampled the original, it will have hip hop and soul lovers both melting to the sounds! track 3 is more than just another edit. sampling boz scaggs and 90 s house vocal. add some fine percussion and you a soulful masterpiece of music. rounding off the ep with a track sampled heavily by dr dre. the owl has taken a couple of loops from a p-funk bomb and made a full length downtempo funk groover. perfect.
